Some children need more support than a traditional dental visit can provide. At Pediatric Dental Centers, our pediatric dental team carefully evaluates each child before determining whether general anesthesia may be appropriate.
General anesthesia may be considered when a child:
- Needs multiple fillings, crowns, extractions, or other extensive dental treatment
- Experiences severe dental anxiety or fear
- Is too young to remain still during longer procedures
- Has special healthcare or developmental needs
- Has difficulty safely completing treatment while awake
- Needs complex or urgent dental care that may be better completed in one planned visit

No. General anesthesia is not appropriate for every child. Your pediatric dentist will evaluate your child’s anxiety, age, medical history, dental needs, ability to cooperate, and available treatment options.
It may be considered for children who need extensive dental work, experience severe dental anxiety, are very young, have special healthcare needs, or cannot safely complete treatment during a traditional visit.
In some cases, general anesthesia allows the dental team to complete several necessary procedures during one planned treatment session.
Parents will receive specific fasting and preparation instructions before the procedure. Always follow the instructions provided by your child’s dental and anesthesia team.
Children undergoing general anesthesia require appropriate monitoring throughout treatment and recovery. The exact monitoring and anesthesia plan depend on the child and procedure.
