Does Florida Medicaid Cover Dental Care for Children? What Parents Need to Know

Many parents don’t realize how much Florida Medicaid dental coverage includes for eligible children. Regular dental visits help prevent cavities, catch oral health problems early, and support healthy growth and development.

At Pediatric Dental Centers, we help families understand their children’s dental needs and access appropriate care.

Does Florida Medicaid Cover Children’s Dental Visits?

Yes. Florida Medicaid provides dental benefits to eligible children and adolescents under age 21. Covered services generally include preventive, diagnostic, and medically necessary dental treatment, subject to program requirements and coverage criteria.

Depending on eligibility, clinical findings, and your child’s dental plan, services may include:

  • Comprehensive and periodic dental examinations
  • Dental cleanings
  • Fluoride treatments
  • Dental X-rays when clinically indicated
  • Dental sealants
  • Fillings for cavities
  • Crowns when medically necessary
  • Tooth extractions
  • Certain emergency dental treatments
  • Other medically necessary dental services

Some specialized services, including orthodontic treatment, may require additional eligibility criteria or prior authorization.

How Often Should My Child Visit the Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends a first dental visit when the first tooth comes in, and no later than 12 months of age. Our guide to your child’s first dental visit explains what to expect.

Many children benefit from preventive dental visits about every six months. However, the dentist should determine the right frequency based on your child’s oral health needs and risk of developing cavities. Children at higher risk for dental disease may need more frequent preventive care.

Why Are Preventive Dental Visits Important?

Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic diseases in children. When cavities are not found and treated in time, they can cause pain, infection, difficulty eating, missed school days, and other complications.

Preventive dental care allows the dentist to:

  • Identify early signs of tooth decay
  • Evaluate dental growth and development
  • Recommend fluoride and sealants when appropriate
  • Teach parents about brushing, flossing, and nutrition
  • Identify developing bite and orthodontic problems
  • Build healthy dental habits from an early age

Are Dental Sealants Covered by Medicaid?

Dental sealants are protective coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of certain teeth to reduce the risk of cavities. Florida Medicaid may cover sealants for eligible children when the clinical and program requirements are met.

Sealants can be especially helpful for children with a higher risk of tooth decay. Your child’s dentist can determine whether sealants are appropriate. Learn more in our article on dental sealants for kids.

What About Dental Treatment Under General Anesthesia?

Some children have extensive treatment needs, significant anxiety, special healthcare needs, or other conditions that can make conventional dental treatment difficult or unsafe. In selected cases, dental treatment under general anesthesia may be clinically appropriate.

Florida Medicaid coverage depends on medical necessity, documentation, the plan’s requirements, and any required authorization. At Pediatric Dental Centers, treatment recommendations are based on each child’s clinical needs and the safest appropriate care setting.

Does Medicaid Cover Braces?

Medicaid orthodontic coverage is generally limited to cases that meet specific medical-necessity criteria. Not every child with crowded or crooked teeth qualifies for Medicaid-funded orthodontic treatment.

An orthodontic evaluation can determine whether treatment is recommended and whether additional documentation or authorization may be needed. Our guide to Florida Medicaid orthodontic coverage explains the process in more detail.

How Can I Find a Pediatric Dentist Who Accepts Medicaid?

When choosing a pediatric dental provider, consider:

  • Experience treating infants, children, and teens
  • Availability of preventive and restorative dental services
  • Participation with your child’s specific Medicaid dental plan
  • Convenient office locations
