When Is the Best Time for Braces for Kids and Teens?

Families looking for braces for kids and teens in South Florida can visit Pediatric Dental Centers at 9 convenient office locations across the region.

Metal braces

The classic option! Strong, reliable, and great for all kinds of smile corrections. Metal brackets and wires gently move teeth into place over time. At Pediatric Dental Centers, we offer comfortable, smaller brackets and fun, customizable band colors so teens can add a little personality to their braces.

Aligners (Coming Soon)

Clear aligners will soon be available as part of our orthodontic services. This discreet and comfortable treatment option helps straighten teeth without traditional braces — perfect for teens looking for a more subtle way to improve their smile.

Life With Braces for Kids and Teens

Getting braces is an exciting step toward a confident smile — and yes, it may mean a few changes to what (and how) your child eats. No stress: it’s mainly about protecting their braces so everything stays on track. Here’s what to expect and a few easy tips to keep in mind:

Cut it into smaller bites

Braces and big bites don’t mix. Help your child cut apples, corn, and sandwiches into smaller pieces so they can eat comfortably and avoid breaking brackets.

Good oral hygine is key

Food gets stuck easily with braces. Remind your child to brush after meals. If they can’t, have them rinse with water and brush as soon as possible (a water flosser helps a lot).

Listen their mouth

If something hurts to chew, it’s okay to skip it. Encourage softer foods for a day or two and keep an eye on sore spots so they don’t turn into bigger issues.

The adjustment phase

The first few days can feel tender. Help your child stick to soft foods like pasta, soups, yogurt, and smoothies until chewing feels normal again.

Foods to avoid

Protect their braces by skipping hard and sticky foods. Avoid popcorn, nuts, hard candy, ice, caramel, and chewing gum — these can bend wires or pop brackets off.

We accept Medicaid and most PPO plans
